G&M Wonders How Matt’s Doing

MANHATTAN BEACH–During a pause in the conversation in a recent staff meeting, agency principal Glenn Miller said, almost out of nowhere, “I wonder how Matt’s doing.” Matt Small, the agency’s former account director, had left for Deutsch L.A. some three weeks earlier. “Yeah, I do too,” echoed Mickey Taylor, another principal. What followed was a quick, impromptu conversation about the former employee. “He used to love that chair,” said one agency staffer, pointing at a chair in the conference room. “Yeah, he did,” said another staffer. “Remember how he was always careful about where he parked his car?” The room laughed fondly at this memory. (Matt had recently purchased a new car.) An agency copywriter added that he had gotten an email from Matt but that the message wasn’t really that informative with regard to how he was doing. All it had said was: “That creative brief you need is on the server.” After a few more memories were voiced, the staff meeting continued. But, curiously, about five minutes later, Taylor said, “I wonder how Anne’s doing?” Anne Oburgh was formerly the agency’s producer.
